Rock drilling is an exceptionally rapid method for forming holes, capable of drilling hundreds of holes in a shift under favourable conditions with just one operator and rig. By utilising automated hands-free rigs, we mitigate risks to operators, including Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).
This super-fast drilling method is ideal for creating holes up to 75mm in diameter in concrete, brick, stone, and other dense materials. It is particularly suited for drilling bulk quantities of holes for dowel bars and anchors. While rock drills excel at pulverising material with their rotary hammer action and tungsten drill bits, they are less effective at cutting through steel reinforcement. However, strategic positioning of holes can avoid steel in reinforced structures.
We operate a range of rotary percussion drills, including vibration-reduced handheld drills, frame-mounted drills like the EZ Drill systems, and robust 3-tonne self-propelled rigs. Despite its limitations for certain applications, rock drilling offers distinct advantages over diamond drilling, including faster drilling speeds, cost-effectiveness, and no need to retrieve cores. Engineers often prefer this method for dowel bar and resin anchor installations due to its roughened hole interior, which enhances adhesion for resins and expansive grouts.
